The Diversity Advisory Group (DAG) advises and educates the School’s constituencies on matters related to economic, racial, ethnic and religious diversity, as well as gender and sexual orientation. The coordination of diversity initiatives and the mediation of specific diversity-related issues also fall under its purview. In an effort to promote effective change, this group of faculty and staff also advises the Administrative Council (AC). The entire group meets with the AC twice a year. Additional meetings may be requested if circumstances warrant. The DAG is clerked by the All-School Diversity Coordinator who also serves as a member of the AC and reports to the Head of School.
“We’re all prejudiced. We all have misinformation about people different and like ourselves, and we’re all exposed to stereotypes . . . People are afraid of conflict. The fear is, if you talk about race, you will generate conflict. But we all need to talk about it..”
— Beverly Tatum interview with Diana Bohmer
The DAG consists of one elected representative each from Lower School, Middle School, Upper School, PE/Athletics, Zartman House, and Sensner Building. In addition, diversity coordinators representing Lower School, Middle School, Upper School, and Zartman/ Sensner are appointed by the Head of School to serve on the DAG. Both the elected and appointed members of the DAG serve two-year terms. Each of the appointed coordinators also serves as clerk of their division’s diversity committee. They also meet with the heads of the divisions to proactively address issues around diversity. The Zartman/Sensner coordinator works with the Assistant Head for Finance and Operations.
The All-School Diversity Coordinator convenes meetings of the Diversity Advisory Group to discuss issues in the various divisions. In order to further assist in determining agenda items to bring before the Administrative Council, the clerk also communicates with the chairs of the various campus committees.
