Washington Home Announcement

September 15, 2015

Dear Friends,

This past summer has been an eventful one for Sidwell Friends, and we are thrilled to be able to share some exciting news with you today. The Sidwell Friends Board of Trustees has signed an exclusive agreement to purchase the Washington Home property on Upton Street, adjacent to the Wisconsin Avenue campus.

The purchase will enable Lower School to be moved from Bethesda into a modern, innovative facility that will serve our youngest students. The acquisition of the 5.7-acre Washington Home site will also allow the School to create new shared community spaces for Middle and Upper School students and attend to a long-overdue renovation of the Upper School building. The opportunity to purchase the property and renovate the building will need to be funded through philanthropy.

This historic opportunity will enable the School to realize Thomas Sidwell’s vision for a unified campus community. For the first time since 1963, when the Lower School moved to Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda, children of all ages, PK-12, will share one campus. The resulting continuity and strengthened sense of community will improve the Sidwell Friends experience for generations to come.

We know you will have many questions in the days and weeks ahead. We encourage you to explore sidwell.edu/onecampus for details on the plans for campus renovations and to offer feedback. You can also register for a Virtual Town Hall Meeting to be held on September 28 where we will discuss plans and answer questions.

We are eager to hear your thoughts and promise to keep you informed as this process moves forward. Thank you for your continued support of Sidwell Friends School.

In friendship,

Bryan Garman
Head of School

Clerk, Board of Trustees
