Team Information

The Sidwell Friends girls varsity soccer team is one of the top teams in the Independent Soccer League (ISL). The league is divided into two divisions, AA and A and is thought of by many as the premier league in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In 2011 the girls varsity team went undefeated with a 7-0 record in the ISL AA division. Many of the team's seniors go on to play soccer at the collegiate level including Wesleyan University, Middlebury College, Duke University, Emory University and the University of Chicago.

Head coach Martin Dell, originally from Hertfordshire County, England, has over 25 years of coaching experience at the Youth, ODP, High School, Collegiate and Professional levels. Martin is formerly the Director of Player Development for Chesterfield United FC and the Director of Coerver Coaching of Virginia. Martin has also served as Director of Youth Development for the Richmond Kickers Professional Soccer Club and Head Coach of the Richmond Kickers Future PDL team. The Future compiled over 50 wins under Martin’s leadership during his 5 seasons as the Head Coach. In 2003 and 2005, the Future was the Mid-Atlantic division champion, and Eastern conference champions and National Semi-Finalists in 2005. Martin will be assisted this year by Omari Williams, who is in his fifth year on the coaching staff at Sidwell and goalie coach Mariano Alonso.

The Sidwell Friends soccer programs begins at the 5th and 6th grade level with soccer being taught as a physical education session in the fall. To continue development of the girls program two teams are fielded from the 7th and 8th grade. The 7/8 teams play a light schedule versus area middle schools. Once in the upper school students can try out for the junior varsity or varsity squad. Both the varsity and junior varsity compete against ISL opponents as well as other area teams. The upper school also offers coed futsal for physical education credit in the winter.
