Sidwell boys squad wins inaugural DC Lacrosse Classic

Another year, another pair of DCSAA state tennis championships. The Sidwell Friends boys and girls tennis squads both won District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) team titles on Thursday, May 14, at the completion of the 4-day tournament. Both teams were champions in 2025.

For the girls’ team, it was their fourth consecutive team title. In the singles final, Sara Abouzeid ’27 defeated Norah King from St. John’s 6-0,6-1.

On the doubles side, Abouzeid teamed with Roxi Hodor ‘27 to claim the title in a final-match walkover against Georgetown Visitation after winning three matches to reach the championship.

This year’s win is the program’s ninth team DCSAA Championship and their fifth in the last six years. In the regular season, which took place last fall, the girls team won their sixth consecutive ISL conference championships and 19th overall.

On the boys’ side, the Quakers clinched the team title in dominant fashion.

In an all-Sidwell singles final, Akshay Mirmira ’27 defeated teammate Boning Wang ‘27 in a highly competitive match 6-3,3-6,10-7. Aiden Shen ‘29 took third place in a two-and-a-half-hour match with a come from behind 11-9 victory over Rohan Le of Georgetown Day School.

The doubles final was also an All-Sidwell affair with Mirmira and Wang teaming up to defeat Shen and Neel Prakash ‘27 by a score of 8-4.

For the boys, who won their seventh consecutive MAC conference championship earlier in May, this was the team’s seventh DCSAA championship.

“This season we have faced injuries, off-court challenges, and on-court opponents head on and we have emerged stronger for it,” said Logan West '01, head coach for both teams. “I am proud of how our student athletes responded to each obstacle they faced with resilience and how they kept adapting, adjusting, and overcoming adverse circumstances to achieve their team goals.”

Across town that same day, Sidwell Friends defeated Jackson Reed 8-7 to emerge as champions of the inaugural DC Lacrosse Classic. Organized to create a city championship in the absence of a DCSAA tournament, the field consisted of four teams: Sidwell Friends, Jackson Reed, Georgetown Day School, and Maret.

Based on season results, the Quakers entered the tournament as the top seed, and hosting Maret in the semifinal round on Monday, taking the game 11-1 with a balanced offensive scoring attack and a staunch defensive effort.

In the championship game against host school Jackson Reed, the Quakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers responded quickly in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

The Quakers scored two goals in the third quarter, but in the final period, Jackson Reed scored two quick goals to take a 7-6 lead with 10 minutes left. The Quakers tied the game with 3:02 remaining and stopped Jackson Reed multiple times in the following possession before Eli Solomon ‘27 scored the winning goal with 1:52 left in the game.

AJ Greenberg '26 was named the Championship MVP for his efforts with numerous saves as goalie.

This victory brought to an end a memorable season for the Quakers and first year Head Coach Sam Mueller. With fewer than 20 students on the roster, every member of the team made a tangible impact.
