A 3-2 victory in a rain-delayed game delivers the Quaker squad’s third DC championship.

The Sidwell Friends Varsity Girls Soccer team defeated Georgetown Day School 3-2 Monday afternoon to capture the 2025 DCSAA State Championship. The championship is the program’s third overall and first since 2021.

After a frenetic start, the Quakers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with a header by Emery Stover ‘28 off a corner kick. A response by Georgetown Day in the 22nd minute evened the scoring 1-1. A lightning delay then halted the game in the 33rd minute causing play to be delayed until Monday afternoon.

Upon resumption, GDS took the lead early in the second half. But Sidwell Friends quickly responded with a GDS own goal to push the score 2-2.

In the 65th minute, Maggie Kendall ‘28 took a pass from Zuri Johnson ‘26 and punched it in to take the 3-2 lead with what became the winning goal.

For her outstanding play, Zuri Johnson ‘26 was named the DCSAA Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

"Winning the championship is incredibly special, but what makes it truly meaningful is getting to share the moment with this remarkable group of student athletes,” Varsity Coach Ryan Alexander said after the game. "These young women embody what it means to be complete student athletes by balancing academic rigor, competitive excellence, and genuine care for their teammates and community.”

Entering the tournament as the #3 seed, the Quakers began their playoff run by defeating Washington International 7-0 in the quarterfinal round.

In the semifinals, the Sidwell Friends squad bested St. John’s College High School 3-0, avenging last year’s State Championship loss.

The DCSAA banner caps another strong season for the program. With a 13-4-1 overall record, the Quakers claimed the regular season Independent School League conference championship, their eighth overall and first since 2021. The team finished runner-up in the ISL tournament, falling to Potomac in the final.

With the soccer team’s win on Monday, Sidwell Friends has now won 40 DCSAA championships across all varsity sports.
