Boys’ and Girls’ teams both win DCSAA championships

Sidwell Friends tennis reigns supreme in the nation’s capital. The boys’ and girls’ squads both won District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) team championships on Thursday, May 15, at the completion of the 4-day tournament.

The girls’ team captured its third straight team title. The singles bracket saw an all Sidwell final, with Natalie McIntosh ’27 winning 6-1, 6-4 over Sara Abouzeid ’27—reversing the finish of their singles final match at last year’s tournament.

On the doubles side, another all Sidwell Friends final ended with McIntosh and Daria Ghassemi ’25 topping Abouzeid and Zoe Shrank ’26, 8-5.

This year’s win is the program’s eighth team DCSAA Championship and their fourth in the last five years.  The win capped a year where the team won their fifth consecutive ISL conference championships, and18th overall.

On the boys’ side, the Quakers clinched the team title when the duo of Louis Anderson III ’26 and Boning Wang ’27 took down the pair from St. Albans 8-4 in the doubles competition.

Akshay Mirmira ’27 finished as runner-up in the singles position, falling in the championship match to St. Albans senior Cyrus Zia 6-3, 6-1. Anderson took third place, defeating Sidwell teammate Wang 10-3.

For the boys, who won their sixth consecutive MAC conference championship earlier in May, this was the team’s sixth overall DCSAA championship and their first win since 2021.

“Watching our young men and women celebrate together was a moment that will be forever etched in my memory,” said Logan West '01, head coach for both teams. “While this year has truly been one for the record books, it is our team culture I’m most proud of and that I believe is the foundation of our success on and off the court. Our student athletes are forming friendships through tennis that will endure long after they leave the tennis courts and our campus.”
