Dear SFS Seniors and Parents,

We hope you are safe and healthy and we look forward to “seeing you” soon! It is difficult to believe that school will begin in just a few weeks! Since the fall is a busy time for seniors, the following overview is provided to help keep you on track:

To support you in this challenging time, SFS is actively investigating offering one fall SAT and one fall ACT to seniors only as a closed testing site. The College Counseling Office asks seniors to complete the following interest formby Monday, August 24 at 12 noon As soon as the School is able to offer you any updates, you will be informed promptly.

End of August in CCO

We encourage you to keep working on your applications, essays and supplements! You are welcome to reach to us via email and send us any drafts for feedback.

August "to do" list:

Continue to research and (if possible) visit colleges.

Continue to work on your college essay(s) and feel free to forward a copy to your college counselor for feedback. Reminder: essay review and final draft support will be offered throughout the fall.

If you have not yet submitted your Senior Autobiography, please submit this to Ms. Morillas,  ASAP! Remember, this mandatory writing assignment can help jumpstart some of your essay writing.

If you have not firmed up both teacher recommendation writers, reach out over email and confirm your recommenders. Also make sure to  complete the recommendation form.

Upcoming fall events and information for seniors:

With the support of your advisor, teachers and college counselor, challenge yourself academically and remain deeply engaged in community life. Do your best this year inside and outside of the classroom. Colleges closely evaluate grades from all four years of high school and the depth of your co-curricular activities. Senior year academic performance is additionally important.

Schedule a fall meeting with your college counselor. All seniors are required to have at least one individual fall meeting with their college counselor prior to October 16.

College admissions representatives are scheduling appointments to virtually visit and meet with the Class of 2021. In addition, we want to provide information on other virtual opportunities. This visit/event schedule is being constantly updated - check the College Counseling pages under Upcoming Visits for the most current information.

Senior College Visit/Work Days are a great time to research college campuses virtually, plan for remote interviews or work on your applications as school is not in session for seniors on those days. The dates for this year are: October 5, October 12, October 23, and November 13.

Additionally, seniors are allowed to take three excused absences throughout the year for college visit purposes. See Ms. Matthews in the Dean of Students’ Office to make any excused absence requests and all teachers must approve of the absence at least one week in advance of the visit day. These days can be used for virtual or in-person visits/programs etc. Remember to use these days wisely, as many students will want to take advantage of them in April when making final decisions! Hopefully, you can visit campuses in the spring.

College workshops will continue this fall. These classes are mandatory and will share important timely information about the application process.

Upcoming fall optional senior parent programming:

September 21, 2020: 12th Grade Parent Coffee with College Counseling

October 8, 2020: Joint Financial Aid Information Night. This program, led by Chad Spencer, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions from Davidson College, will share basic information about the financial aid process.

Students and parents are welcome to contact their college counselor directly with any specific questions, or feel free to reach out to Ms. Morillas, the college counseling assistant, with general questions. We look forward to supporting you, and to welcoming you “back”!

In friendship,

The College Counseling Team
