Class of 2023: Get Ready for Fall

The College Counseling Office (CCO) would like to welcome you back to a new school year. While the immediate focus of sophomores and their families should be to continue building upon the successes of the ninth grade, it is never too early to begin building a foundation for a successful college process.

Dear SFS Sophomores and Parents,

The College Counseling Office (CCO) would like to welcome you back to a new school year. While the immediate focus of sophomores and their families should be to continue building upon the successes of the ninth grade, it is never too early to begin building a foundation for a successful college process.

The following overview is provided as a preview of the college-related events and various support available to you this year.

College Timeline and Advice for Sophomores:

With the support of your advisor and teachers, challenge yourself academically and remain deeply engaged in community life. Do your best this year inside and outside of the classroom. Colleges closely evaluate grades from all four years of high school and the depth of your co-curricular activities. Build on your success from ninth grade and stay involved (remotely) in the life of the School.

All sophomores are invited to participate in a remote practice SAT exam this fall. The in person College Board PSAT exam will not take place in October.  No preparation is needed for the practice exam. See below for registration information.

Optional Lunch and Learn workshops will take place over the spring term. These sessions are not mandatory but CCO does encourage your attendance as we will share important information about the college search process.

Sophomores will sit for a practice ACT in the spring semester. This is another opportunity to take a standardized college entrance exam. Again, no preparation is needed.

Have a question? The CCO will host virtual drop-in times throughout the fall - this semester’s drop in times will be announced soon! Please take advantage of this time to “pop in” with a quick question.

Sign up for a virtual proctored practice SAT on October 28 at 9 AM

If you would like to sit for an optional practice SAT through Compass Test Prep, please register here by October 20. Information will be forthcoming from Compass Test Prep closer to the test date of October 28.

College Counseling Liaison for Sophomores

The College Counseling Office wants to support you this year and we are aware that sometimes questions arise or you may be in need of some information. In addition to weekly drop-in times for students, we want to introduce you to Ms. Danita Salone, Associate Director of College Counseling, who will serve as your Sophomore College Counseling Liaison this year. If you are in need of any college counseling support, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Salone, saloned@sidwell.edu

For Parents:

We will introduce the college process and additionally provide an overview of standardized testing and financial aid during the school year.

October 8, 2020 at 7pm: Joint Financial Aid Information Night. This program, led by Chad Spencer, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions from Davidson College, will share basic information about the financial aid process.

November 12, 2020 at 7pm: Standardized Testing Information Session (parents only)

February 3, 2021 at 8am: Sophomore Parent Meeting with Academic Dean and College Counseling

We also encourage sophomores to “stop by” during our virtual drop in times with any questions or concerns once the school year begins. Please feel free to contact Jackie Morillas, the college counseling assistant, with any immediate questions and/or Ms. Salone, the CCO Sophomore Liaison.

We look forward to supporting you in the years ahead!

In friendship,

The College Counseling Team
