Science

Science is both a body of knowledge about the workings of our world and the processes that established, extend, and revise that knowledge. Both elements are essential, and one cannot make progress in science without an understanding of both.

Students who successfully complete a program of study in the natural sciences should:

  1. know, use, and interpret scientific explanations of the natural world;

  2. generate and evaluate scientific evidence and explanations;

  3. understand the nature and development of scientific knowledge; and

  4. participate productively in scientific practices and discourse.

Science courses in the Upper School provide developmentally appropriate introductory and advanced instruction in physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science. These classes are structured to ensure students can have a broad experience of learning both content and skills associated with the natural sciences. Students take a three year introductory sequence of physics in 9th grade, chemistry in 10th grade, and biology in 11th grade, with accelerated courses available in each discipline. As seniors, students are able to take advanced courses in physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science, as well as semester-long elective science classes. Some students also pursue summer research through summer outreach programs.
