How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in applying to Sidwell Friends School.

Applications are accepted for all grades except 12th, but we only regularly review applications for Pre-K, K, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 9th, where openings are guaranteed. If you wish to begin the process for a grade other than those listed, the process varies slightly and you should consult our team for more information.

Sidwell Friends uses, Ravenna, a web-based application program for the admissions process. The online application includes student information, family information, and a $70 application fee for domestic applicants or a $100 application fee for international applicants. The deadline for submission of the application form, student questionnaire and parent questionnaire (Part I) is December 16, 2019.

Supporting documents (Part II) are due by January 15, 2020. Specific documents required for each grade are listed on the application and may include the following:

  • Teacher recommendations
  • Test results (WPPSI, WISC, ISEE, SSAT)
  • Transcripts

Lower School

Take a Lower School Tour (September–December)

Tours are offered several mornings a week, September through December, and last approximately 90 minutes. Most events are designed for parents and guardians only, however, we offer parent and student group tours for applicants to 4th grade.

Submit Online Application (Due December 16)

The online application includes student information, family information, and a $70 application fee for domestic applicants or a $100 application fee for international applicants. The application deadline is December 16.

Sign up for a Parent Meeting (September–Mid-January)

Parent meetings are offered from September through mid-January and are strongly suggested but not required. Meeting times fill up quickly as the application deadline approaches, so please register as soon as you submit the application.

Parent meetings for 1st and 2nd grade applicants will be scheduled if space becomes available in those grades.

Register for a Group Visit (October–Mid-January)

Children applying to Lower School expansion grades are invited to spend some time at the school in a small-group setting.

Prekindergarten (PK) and kindergarten (K) group visits take place from October through mid-January. These events fill up quickly as the admissions deadline approaches, so please register for a group visit through Ravenna as soon as you submit your application.

3rd and 4th grade group visits take place from October through mid-January. These events fill up quickly as the admissions deadline approaches, so please register for a group visit through Ravenna as soon as you submit your application

Group visits for 1st and 2nd grade applicants will be scheduled if space becomes available in those grades.

Submit Teacher Recommendations (Due January 15)

Applicants to all grades must submit one recommendation from their current teacher.

Request School Records (Due January 15)

Applicants for PK–grade 4 should submit a report card or progress report if the child receives one from his or her current school.

Complete Testing (Due January 15)

All applicants are required to have one of the following individual tests administered by an educational diagnostician:

PK–1st grade: (younger than age 6): WPPSI-IV

1st–3rd grade: (older than age 6 years): WISC-V

Applicants to 4th grade may take the WISC-V or the elementary level SSAT

For WPPSI/WISC testing, these test administrators are available in our area, but you are not required to use a testing site on this list. You should arrange an appointment for your child with a tester as early in the process as possible and request that the test results be sent directly to Sidwell Friends School by January 15.

Middle School

Take a Middle School Tour (September–December)

Information sessions and tours are offered several mornings a week, September through December. Events are for parents/guardians and their children. Information sessions and tours last approximately 2 hours.

The Middle and Upper School Open House will take place on Sunday, November 17 from 1:00 to 3:30. Please register by clicking the Sign up for a Tour button on the right.

Schedule a Student Interview and Parent Meeting (September–November)

Student interviews and parent meetings are strongly suggested for applicants to 6th and 7th grade. Please register for an interview through Ravenna as soon as you submit your child’s application since these appointments fill up quickly. We cannot guarantee an interview and parent meeting appointment for applications received after December 1. PLEASE NOTE: If a student signs up for a shadow visit, they will participate in an interview on that date. They will not need to attend a separate interview with their parents.

Student interviews and parent meetings for 5th and 8th grade applicants will be scheduled if space becomes available in those grades.

Spend a Day with Friends

Shadow visits offer prospective students a wonderful opportunity to experience the classrooms, students, and teachers at Sidwell Friends. Visitors will be paired with buddies in their current grade level and will attend all classes with them. Shadow visits are optional and for 6th and 7th grade applicants only. PLEASE NOTE: If a student signs up for a shadow visit, they will participate in an interview on that date. They will not need to attend a separate interview with their parents.

Shadow visits begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 2:45 p.m. Please know that spaces are extremely limited and fill quickly.

Submit Teacher Recommendations (Due January 15)

We require recommendations from the student’s English teacher and math teacher. If the student applying for Middle School has one homeroom teacher who teaches both subjects, please ask that teacher to submit the recommendations for each subject separately.

Request Transcript (Due January 15)

Applicants to grades 5–8 should submit transcripts from the first half of the current school year and the full previous school year. Please submit the transcript release form to your child’s school authorizing it to send transcripts directly to Sidwell Friends School. We recommend that you request the transcripts in early January so that the most up-to-date grading period will be included with your child’s application.

Applicants for 5th–8th grades must take either the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). However, if your child is applying to 5th grade and is taking the WISC-V for another school application, we will accept that test in lieu of the SSAT or ISEE. These WISC-V test administrators are available in our area, but you are not required to use a testing site on this list.

To schedule the SSAT or the ISEE, visit www.ssat.org or www.erblearn.org/parents as early in the process as possible. Please make sure that Sidwell Friends will receive the test results by January 15. Use our school code (7366 SSAT or 090200 ISEE) to have the results sent directly to Sidwell Friends.

Upper School
