A brief history of Sidwell Friends' athletic fashion—as diverse as the students who wear it.

1. In addition to bloomers, these girls’ basketball players from 1927 wore circular “F” and “S” patches to show they were from a Friends school.

2. The members of the 1940 junior varsity boys’ basketball team sported jerseys that spelled out “Friends.”

3. 4. 5. By the 1960s, both “S” and “F” appeared on the front of these baseball and soccer uniforms. Female athletes in the 1960s often wore pleated tunics with the school seal affixed to them.

6. In the 1970s, a resurgence of “Friends” appeared on uniforms, as shown on these football jerseys, despite the fact that this was also the decade when the School started to be known more colloquially as “Sidwell” instead of “Friends.”

7. In the early 1980s, the girls’ volleyball and soccer teams tried a vertical “Friends.”

8. 9. “Friends” endured through the 1980s, as these action shots of the girls’ field hockey team and boys’ lacrosse team show.

10. In the 1990s, the girls’ soccer team returned to the school seal of the 1960s— though this time paired with shorts instead of pleated tunics.

11. Also in the 1990s, “Quakers” came into vogue and was emblazoned on the front of some jerseys.

12. Over the last two decades, some teams have continued the tradition of using “Quakers,” while other teams sport “Sidwell Friends” on the front, or simply “Sidwell.”

13. Moving into the 2019 season and beyond, the new Star Fox mascot is making its first appearance across all sports along with the School’s latest uniforms. Sidwell Friends Athletics returns to tradition for its new look: “Quakers” on home-game uniforms and “Sidwell” on away-game uniforms. A key design element across all sports is the Quaker value of simplicity. (Header image above)

“The Quakers,” “Friends,” “Sidwell,” “Sidwell Friends” (“the Star Foxes”?!)—who knows what fans will call the next generation of student athletes or what they will wear (hopefully not a return to bloomers). But it sure will be fun to watch.
