Eyes shone brightly—with joy, with pride, and with some happy tears—on masked faces on the evening of June 10 as the class of 2025 walked into the David P. Pearson '52 Athletic Center to say goodbye to their Middle School years.

But first there was a stroll down memory lane. A student-produced slideshow showcased family photographs of the soon-to-be Upper Schoolers as babies and young children, and then as the young adults they have become. Afterwards, students from each advisory spoke movingly about the teachers that have guided them through their 7^th and 8^th grade years; they also expressed gratitude to all of those whose work meant a return to in-person learning this year, including facilities, the dining staff, the Health Services team, and other often-unsung members of the Sidwell Friends staff. As part of their gratitude, the class donated three American sweetgum trees that will be planted on the Middle School campus, symbolizing this class’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

Head of School Bryan Garman spoke about how the Class of 2025 has faced challenges no one could have foreseen when they started their time at the Middle School. “Your energy reminds us that change begins with every one of us … and that the smallest gestures make a difference,” he said. “Thank you for making the Middle School a better place.”

Middle School Principal Rachel Kane also spoke about how the class’s maturity and fortitude was much beyond their years, celebrating not only their endurance over the past year and a half, but their commitment to anti-racism, the environment, and social justice. “You are still children, but you are ready to take on—and win—against many adults,” she said. “You are ready for the fight … You have seen some dark days, and you have seen, leaned into, and lived in the Light.”

Each student then crossed the stage for individual recognition, a certificate, and a fist bump from Garman, as their families proudly applauded. They were proud not only of the academic accomplishments of their students, but how they have risen to meet the challenges and demands of a year that asked so much of them. The class of 2025 is ready for any fight that lies ahead—though perhaps after a well-deserved summer break.
